(More customer reviews)This Schrade Old Timer has been my "everyday" serviceable pocket knife for years and years. I started using them as a preteen and have had one ever since.
Before I go on though, I fear to report that the knife you see here is not the one your granddaddy or daddy carried! Oh my no! The Imperial Schrade Company went out of business in 2004 and after 100 years it no longer is owned by that company, manufactured in this country, and is a sad, sad shadow of its old self.
These "new" knives are made in China. The steel use is stainless steel therefore you do not get the wonderful old stain and patina that the originals had. They are much more difficult to sharpen, the workmanship, compared to the originals, is quite shoddy, and while it is difficult to define...the "feel" is just not the same.
This is not an expensive knife as knives go, but the "old" original version certainly gave you much, much more than your monies worth. The edge could be sharpened razor keen and it was almost impossible to break the things. I realize that many still like this knife, but I would be willing to bet that those that do like it have never owned one of the older originals made here in the United States. Now I am not one of these people who refuse to buy anything made in China. If the product made there is better than what we produce...so be it. But in this case (as in many others I might add), the quality is not there.
To be honest, I haunt auction houses and sales looking for the older, originals and always consider myself lucky when I find one. I have a nice stash of these things that will last me through to the end as even I am incapable of loosing that many knives.
I am giving this one three stars because I am sort of sentimental. Were it an original, I would give if five. You may quite well be happy with this knife...I hope you are, but do be aware of what you are buying!
